The Trainer #149: The GateKeeper
To this day, technicians industry-wide have apprehensions about Secured Gateway (or SGW). Fears like:
“SGW causes limited scan tool functionality” and, “We need factory-level tooling” are rumors frequently shared.
With today’s connected vehicles, SGW was implemented (On 2018+ FCA vehicles and some 2020+ Nissans) to protect vehicles against infiltration from the outside world.
In 2018, two clever men were able to develop software to wirelessly sabotage (or “hack”) successfully into a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. They did so without any added devices to the vehicle. The hack was carried about by infiltrating the vehicle’s connected infotainment system.
This infiltration allowed the hackers to take over the vehicle’s audio, windshield wipers, climate control, steering, powertrain, and braking systems. This left the door open for hundreds of thousands of vehicles with the same connected infotainment system.
In 2018 FCA developed a device known as the Secured Gateway to prevent infiltration from the outside world. Just as it is described, it acts as a gate that opens and closes. Allowing information to be accessed or restricted, via the DLC or Infotainment system. Through technician and scan tool registration, access was granted for that individual using that scan tool (and tethered PC). This was at the OE/Dealership level. For the aftermarket to have that same level of access a 12+8 cable was need to bypass the SGW, requiring removal of the Infotainment head unit for access. This was very time consuming.
Without authentication, the scan tool is left with limited functionality like scanning for powertrain DTCs and monitoring live powertrain data. No bi-directional control, special tests, or even a DTC clear can be carried out.
A third party known as AutoAuth mimicked FCA’s model to provide that same level of security for the independent aftermarket shops/technicians (or IAMs). The same authentication process can now be carried out for the IAMs.
In this video, the Autel MS-Ultra is featured establishing connectivity to 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and a connection to the AutoAuth server via a WiFi connection. This allows the MS-Ultra to authenticate just as the dealer technicians do. More importantly for independent technicians, there is no longer a need to remove/bypass components for connectivity. With just few key strokes, authentication is carried out in just several seconds and full functionality of the MS-Ultra is available.

That would typically mean the pum...

The Trainer #147: The key to efficient driveability diagnostics

This is usually best accomplished by obtaining driveability data right from the driver’s seat. Utilizing a sc...

Innova SEMA Interview - New Professional Grade Diagnostic Tablets and Great New Features
Thank you for the tech tip and nice injector cleaning tool. Like you, I would install new injectors. Ya, I know, "New doesn't mean good!" But I don't like removing something two and three times only to find out there's an internal problem in the part itself. HOWEVER, your injector cleaning tool can be used as a diagnostic test tool to expose even a bad NEW injector.
Thank you for the info.
Thank you so much for this Uncle. God bless🙌
This is the problem for every fn thing that can possibly b wrong from bumper to bumper!!!!!
Why bring all this up when there a auto technician shortage. Manage what people? Fix the pay shortage then you can think about managing. Lol😂l
Man you know that it always have someone out there who mess it up for everyone. Thanks B. Appreciate the information.
No worries…it’s my pleasure
Does Autuauth have a listing of the approved tools that doesn't require you to buy an account? Asking for the folks who might want to buy a new scan tool and don't know if it will be supported or not even if the tool seller says it is.
Good morning, Tools must be registered to electronically bypass SGW. The registration is responsible for the fee. There are no tools available (that I am aware of) that will electronically bypass SGW
@@brandonsteckler3417 Sorry, I meant a list where you don't have to set up an account with them to then discover if your scan tool is eligible IE they list the snap-on models that can be approved or the TopDon or Launch or Autel models that can be registered. From what I can tell the way it currently works is that you set up your account, then you pay and then you can select the tool you have and see if it can even be used with auto-auth to access the vehicle. With all the tools out there these days it would be nice to know if the one you were looking at can really be authorized or not.
Much appreciated Brandon ! Good practical ideas .
Thank you for watching !
I had my engine replaced. Three days later, the engine light turned on. They checked it twice and they said catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I was told it might came from the bad engine and ruin the cat. It costs a lot to fix it. I used cataclean and the engine light turned off for 3 days but came back on again. They trying to charge me 3500 for it. I can't afford it. Trying to figure out where to take it for a cheaper price
You stated that the $50 a year allows five technicians to use the registered tool but when I signed up recently, it was five tools that could be registered for the $50. I signed up under the independent technician. I have three scan tools registered, and it accepted all three for the $50.
Well, that is great news and something we were not aware of. I’m. It sure if it was a misinterpretation on our behalf or the rules have changed. Either way, sounds like great news to me 😊
Does not work with my thinkcar scan tool and the tool is registered
I’m not sure of tools that do not yet comply with SGW/AutoAuth.
Lets make vehicle's so complicated that they're all ways in the shop. Thats progress!
I understand your frustration. My goal was to demonstrate that it is not difficult to work with.
@@brandonsteckler3417 right.ok.
2 hackers and one badly designed vehicle have screwed the industry. Thanks. I understand others will follow, but there has been no issue since. That doesn't warrant the whole industry to change. I could be wrong in this statement.
I understand your frustration but unfortunately this is just something we can decide to comply with or fight. As you can see, it’s not very difficult to deal with.
This voids rights to repair act laws.
No it doesn’t. Just have to register to get into the vehicle
At consumer costs.
It gets the industry closer to needing a licensed technician to work on cars also. Which ever side of that fence you may be on.
@justinhayward5027 this does break the law of right to repair. An you have no access unless you have an active account with the tool company... broken law
I won’t argue that point. I’m just here to demonstrate that it is not difficult to deal with.
Ya did not dispels anything.. won't let you unless you have active updates... so keep spending your 2000. Plus the 50. Per year. This is all bull money grab
Sorry if I want clear on what I wa Ma attempting to display. I didn’t ask for a 3rd party to govern my access. I also didn’t ask for anyone to “hack” a vehicle and boast of it publicly. But, I do feel a responsibility to help the men and women of our industry get educated on what they will be facing and prepare for how to deal with it. Thank you for watching and I’m sorry for your disappointment.
It's not the $50 a year it really isn't it's the problem of being in an area where you have accessibility to the internet if I'm wrong please tell me but I think you need internet in order to make this operation work⁉️
Thank you, This is true
yep i tried it but could not get mine to work. could not get help from auto auth on why my tool would not work, so i found out u have to keep an internet connection the whole time.
Did Brandon take Pete’s spot
Yes, Pete is no longer with the company

Yea I have bought Autel before. I just bought an Autel PS 100 and can get no support
Thanks again Scott … nice review. Heres a suggestion for improving these kinds of diag vids. Wot u show is an obvious virtually unmissable fault profile. Yes in the real world u sometimes get that sort of gift👍 But wot abt looking at common complaint, like a near perfect idle but for a 12:17 slight fish bite intermittent kind of miss that may be a slightly clogged or leaking injector … wot does that sort of subtle fault look like on scope. Is it even detectable and wot are some scope strategies for nailing it. Cheers, Alex

the problem I have with this example is you're describing voltage drop in a series circuit but you drawn it in parallel
By the way, it’s pronounced MAH-LEE, or MAH-LA.
Wow, what great video with such good explanation. Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
Noon question: On the two bulb example the first bulb wasn’t lit but second was. To me, that meant that current was flowing freely through first bulb and was able to light second bulb. So, why did the first bulb not light while the second one did?
A la próxima q tenga uno de estos casos te llamo Brandon😊
Thanks for sharing💪🏽👍🏼
My pleasure!
Yup. Seen this before but on the Ford F250/F350 steering column. Ford put the wires up through the selector handle to the OD switch. Where the wires entered the selector handle hole the metal is not smooth, the wires are pulled tight and the wires are not covered/protected. Talk about triple jeopardy, planned obsolescence! So I was able to add some protection to the wires, then I lengthened the wires for less bending and mounted them to eliminate the tight pulling by routing them a little differently. It worked. Never had a comeback. Thank you for this video. If you question the engineering design, the engineers would tell you "We've NEVER had any problems with our design." O course not! But then, they never tested the vehicle for 10 years/150,000 miles, Summer and Winter, humid and dry. If they saw what I did for the repair, "Oh we can't do that!" "That extra wire, plus the 2 cable ties would add at least $1.00 to the wholesale cost of building the vehicle. Added to 10,000 built vehicles, that's lost profit!" But don't worry. We can manufacture "replacement parts" to fix the vehicle for maybe 10 years. UHUH!
Seriously, as soon as I saw the movement and tension being placed on that wire my immediate reaction was "who thought that was a good idea?!" 🤦♂️
Mine cleared right up after I found a loose plug wire,,,how bout dat,,,
Do they have experts on there that can program Porsche BCM 2012?if yes name plse

Excellent video. Ran into this multiple times after customers had replaced their maf with ones from local parts stores. PIDs, primarily the calculated airflow, were way high after the new sensor had been installed. Installing a dealer MAF fixed it almost every time. I do recall needing to program one ECM.
Pete, if you can help .... @5:24 the the AFS stream 1 graph seems behaving normal and lower stream graph is at constant zero....is it due to narrowband sensor has not achieved required temperature to give its output???
